My Camera History (current cameras: #6 and #5)

(Camera #6) Underwater I'm currently (since Nov 2009) using a Canon S90 with an Ikelite housing (which replaced camera #4 - my Canon S80 which i had been using since April 2006).  It is a pretty good camera and has a nice small size which makes it easy to travel with. I do have a DS-125 strobe but still haven't spent much time with it, and find it too big to travel with (thanks to the latest airline baggage restrictions). I'll be playing with this setup more this year.  Unfortunately I cannot use the Inon wet lenses I have with this existing housing.  I'll keep hold of them for the time being to see if I can utilize them in the future - I have 2 Macro lenses that can be stacked in case I want to see the nose hair of a shrimp, and a Wide Angle which is great for wrecks - they are not compatible with this current housing !! Until October 2007, the S80 was also my topside camera....but then Canon released the 40D and I just couldn't resist. This means the S90 & 80 are now exclusively for U/W use (unless i need a small size camera to travel with)..S80 is my emergency camera !

(Camera #5) Topside I have just purchased my first dSLR camera setup (Oct 2007)- a Canon 40D with Sigma 17-70 and Canon 70-300 lenses. I had originally ordered an Olympus E-410 - their newest, smallest model with Live View - the idea being to get a housing and take it underwater. Unfortunately, I sent it back - after a couple of days of testing I realized the Live View that sounded so good in fact made it so slow it would be un-usable for me underwater. The 40D is great - extremely quick focusing and great quality pics. I haven't played much with the live view but have been taking lots of wildlife photos and recently been playing with studio photography.

The decision to house the thing and take it underwater is still to be determined...it will cost a ridiculous amount of money and will be super huge when trying to travel....but maybe it will happen in the next year or so ! .....however having a smaller camera does have a lot of advantages underwater...size, ease of use and having video clip feature is also nice......dSLRs do get huge, heavy and very very expensive........

For now it is being used exclusively as a topside camera. I have managed to get some good photos, but also get lots of them that are not quite sharp enough....mainly I take wildlife pics at Ding Darling Reserve and Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. The studio pics are being done in Naples with a meetup group...interesting stuff !

The photo editing / processing software I use is mainly Adobe Lightroom and occasionally Photoshop CS.

Digital Cameras #2 and #3 (2003-2006)

The S100 served me well, but within a year or so was already out-dated. Being a traveller who liked to have the latest toys and as my friends had more mega-pixels I also needed them - hence the upgrade to the new S500 (5MP !!) in 2003. The camera was another fully automatic PnS bTravel in 2005ut was able to take some nice photos. when I returned to diving in 2004 I bought a housing for it, and it became my camera for both topside and underwater. Actually camera #2 and #3 were both the same model and both had a similar watery fate...the last one drowning early 2006 in the Keys !

My First Digital Camera (2001)

In 2001 I was working in Chile. I purchased my first digital camera. It was a Canon S100 (2MP) - at that time that was a lot of mega-pixels ! The camera was pocket sized and so I was able to take it with me on all of my trips around the Country. At first glance Chile may not seem like a likely destination, but you have wine, beaches, mountains and skiing - something to keep you amused all year round...and of course the food is amazing.

The Pre-Digital Age (Pre-2001)

I do have some wonderful photos that need to be scanned at some point, or then again, maybe at some point I will travel to those places again with a digital camera. Here are the highlights:

  • 2000 - In Brazil, Salvador de Bahia I spent the millennium here....wonderful place - beach, sunshine - everything you expect Brazil to be
  • 1999 - Spent 6 months in Egypt, working on a project in Cairo. The way to work each day had a backdrop of the Pyramids over the Nile...it was during this time I learned to dive.
  • 1995-1999- I moved out to Hong Kong for 3 1/2 years, first with EDS, then I switched to Oracle. This was a lot of fun - drinking, playing rugby & squash and travelling. Highlights included a 6 months assignment to Indonesia, trips all over Asia. Some of the most memorable things were being in Beijing the weekend their president died, the handover of Hong Kong to the Chinese in 1997 and being on a bachelor party in Vietnam when we got the news that Princess Di had died - very interesting times.
